Swirl How
Swirl How is at the heart of the Coniston Fells. All the other fells in the range radiate out from Swirl How summit in a series of ridges roughly in the shape of a cross. Wetherlam heads east from across the Prison Band ridge. Great Carrs and Grey Friar set off west together for scant yards before Great Carrs arcs majestically northwards. To the south, the wide ridge of Brim Fell stretches away to reach the Old Man before taking a detour and continuing over Dow Crag. The whole range was part of Lancashire until 1974 when a local government re-hash handed the area over to the newly formed Cumbria.

The summit of Swirl How is rough, rocky and marked by a large stone cairn. From the summit the ground to the north disappears suddenly down the impressive precipitous crags of Broad Slack. Other points of note on the mountain are the wonderful Prison Band ridge, and the Great and Lttle How Crags above Levers Water.

In Wainwright height rankings, Swirl How comes in as a respectable 9th highest of the Southern Fells, and 34th highest overall.
