Walking Log ... Walks including "Grey Friar"

Grey Friar
Grey Friar is a large dome topped mountain sitting on the western edge of the Coniston Fells, looking over the Duddon valley. It is connected to Great Carrs and Swirl How via a broad col. Until 1974 the whole Coniston range was part of Lancashire before a local government re-hash gave the area to the newly formed Cumbria.

The top is a rough plateau with many rocky outcrops and two cairns, the one to the south east being the higher. Great views across to the Sca Fell range.

In Wainwright height rankings, Great Carrs comes in at 15th highest of the Southern Fells, and 50th highest overall.
