Coniston Old Man
Highest point, if only by a few feet, of the Coniston range of fells. The Old Man dominates the view west from Coniston village. Until 1974 the whole range was inside Lancashire with the Old Man being the county top - then the government saw fit to re-jig the county boundaries, take the whole range away from Lancashire and give them away to the newly formed Cumbria.

Coniston Old Man is the southern tip of the broad grassy ridge running from Swirl How, the fell from which all the others in this range radiate. To the west it has grassy slopes, but the more interesting aspects are from the south and particularly the east, where it is steep and rocky and at times has been described as Alpine or Himalayan in character. Much of this landscape has been heavily scarred through extensive copper and slate mining which at points reaches up past the 2000 foot contour. The summit is adorned with a stone cairn that sits atop a large slate platform.

In Wainwright terms, the Old Man comes in as the 8th highest of the Southern Fells, and is 32nd in the overall rankings. In popularity terms though, judging by the crowds this giant attracts, it must surely be in the top ten - don't expect to be on your own when you visit!
