Helvellyn
Helvellyn is the mightiest fell to the east of the Lake District - third highest mountain in England, it is topped only by the two Scafells, and even then by less than 100 feet. The Helvellyn range is massive and rises from Grisedale Tarn over Dollywagon Pike to run at high level all the way up to Clough Head. With the Fairfield range, which heads south from Grisedale Tarn, this wall of rock runs all the way from from Ambleside to Keswick, effectively splitting the Lake District in two.

The western face is a relatively gentle and partially forested slope, with the eastern flank being by far the more dramatic. From this side, Helvellyn throws out two aretes - Swirral Edge which leads to the conical summit of Catstye Cam, and the infamous Striding Edge, the most famous scramble in England. Between these two arms, and below the precipitous crags dropping from the summit nestles the stunning Red Tarn. With these attractions it isn't difficult to see why Helvellyn is the most popular and most climbed Lakeland fell.

This wonderful mountain is ranked the highest of Wainwright's Eastern Fells, and is the third highest Wainwright overall.
