Walking Log ... Walks including "Cromwell's Bridge (aka Devil's Bridge)"

Cromwell's Bridge (aka Devil's Bridge)
Ancient packhorse bridge spanning the river Hodder. It was built by Sir Richard Shireburn to replace an old wooden bridge at the same spot, and dates back to 1562.

Legend has it this is where Oliver Cromwell marched his army across the Hodder to engage the Royalists at the Battle of Preston in 1648, but it is more likely that he crossed a mile or so further upstream at Higher Hodder Bridge.
