Ingleborough
Possibly the most attractive, most popular and most recognisable mountain for miles around. Located in the Yorkshire Dales, it is only topped for height by Whernside, which lies approximately five miles to the north.

Along with Pen-y-ghent and Whernside it makes up the arduous Three Peaks of Yorkshire walk, a gruelling 23 mile circular trek starting and finishing at the Pen-y-ghent Cafe in the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The aim is to complete it inside 12 hours - no mean feat as there is over a mile (5500ft.) of ascent and descent involved.

The summit of Ingleborough is a huge five acre plateau, which over two thousand years ago served as an ancient hill fort (the walls that guarded the fort, at one time surrounding the whole top, are still apparent in places). Sitting at the highest point is a stone trig column and a large X-shaped wall shelter. The views from here are incredible - the Lakes to the northwest, the Dales to the north and east, Bowland to the south (including a fine sight of Pendle Hill), and at times the sea to the west looks within spitting distance.

Ingleborough sends out two spurs. The larger forms Simon Fell and Park Fell and reaches northeast towards Ribblehead. Little Ingleborough heads away to the south, and positioned on its eastern flank is the famous Gaping Gill cavern.

Surrounded by limestone pavements and scars, sink holes, caves and cliffs, Ingleborough is a stunning mountain and well worth a visit. As previously mentioned it is the second highest mountain in the Dales.
