Walking Log ... Walks including "Pendle Hill"

Pendle Hill
The Queen of all hills and the pride of Lancashire (but maybe this walker is a bit biased). The name means "hill hill hill" if you believe Wikipedia, being derived from three different languages.

Although some way short of mountain status, Pendle Hill is still a dominating presence. This is due mainly to its isolated location. The fact that it stands apart from both the Pennines and the Bowland fells somehow adds to its stature to make it appear larger than it actually is.

With an instantly recogniseable profile, Pendle is visible for many miles around. Although it has steep flanks to the north, east and west, the top is a long broad plateau covering over twenty square miles. It commands views over the Trough of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales and fells such as Ingleborough, and on an incredibly clear day, the Lake District and Snowdonia.

Pendle is renowned the world over, but is probably best known for the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. Ten local residents from the Devices and Maddox families were tried and found guilty of witchcraft. Most were hanged in Lancaster. These terrible events have mellowed over the intervening years and have led to a romanticism that now makes it difficult not to conjure up images of broomsticks and black cats at the mere mention of the name "Pendle".

Another claim to fame is that it is the location where George Fox, the founder of the Quaker (Religious Society of Friends) movement, claims to have had a vision during a climb to the top in 1652.
